Children‘s Theater Performance

In the Chapel

The Aggregate Theatre is bringing their show Giselle la Trent the Gazellephant to our church campus for a special free performance on Saturday, April 6th. From their website about the show: Written and performed live by local, professional artists, Giselle la Trent the Gazellephant is a humorous and heartfelt 40-minute children’s musical about a girl named Giselle on her first day at a new school. Half gazelle and half elephant, Giselle is not your typical fourth-grader, and she wants nothing more than to start off on the right foot at Thomas Girafferson Elementary (things haven’t gone so well at her other schools). Well, there is one thing she wants more than anything else: to be a world famous rockstar! But when Margaret the Cat and Gore the Warthog don’t like Giselle’s rockstar dreams, they bully Giselle into competing in a rockstar showdown. The surprising results send Giselle into a spiral of fears and problems she doesn’t know how to fix. Even her teacher, Ms. Pronunciation, can’t provide the comfort she needs. Not until a visit from a wise Dalmatian named Wags inspires Giselle to accept herself for all of her wonderful uniqueness does she learn that it’s easier to be […]

Braver Angels Workshop: Depolarizing Within

Fellowship Hall

With the election season upon us, it’s a good time to be learning some new skills to help you survive the times. Depolarizing Within teaches participants to look within and develop strategies for engaging in politics without demonizing, and how to constructively intervene in social conversations with like-minded peers. Participants will learn: How to be more aware of their own “inner polarizer” How to be critical without demonizing, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population Strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views Questions? Ask Sheree Vodicka. Pizza will be provided. More information → Register

Event Series Drop-In Self Awareness

Drop-In Self-Awareness

Room 209

When we observe ourselves feeling and reacting from unsettling emotions like anger, sadness, and fear, the self awareness practice helps us investigate so we can release stories and patterns that no longer serve our wellbeing and so we can embrace ourselves and others with more compassion and grace. If you want to learn more about the self awareness practice, please drop in and observe 2 members of the Common Thread Community do this practice together. No prior knowledge or experience is required and everyone is invited and welcome. We will meet in Room 209. Feel free to bring your lunch/snack if desired. Get more information about self awareness here

Film Screening of 1946

In the Chapel

Join us for a second film screening of 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture, a feature documentary about the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians due to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. Website description of the film: It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, including the personal stories of the film’s creators, 1946 is at once challenging, enlightening, and inspiring. While other documentaries have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease - Biblical Literalism. Common Thread is eager to host another film screening, followed by what is sure to be another good discussion. Join us! Register

Intergenerational Sunday

Intergenerational Sunday is a time for us all to appreciate what folks of every age have to offer and receive in our community, and we are doing this so that our youth know from experience what a healthy spiritual community looks like when they are old enough to seek one out for themselves. The service will be kid AND adult friendly, and hopefully nurture the inner child in us all. No Sunday School downstairs on April 28—let's learn, practice, share, and love together.
